Free Stuff Problems 1/25/12 by Gary M. Rutherford

I read something the other day that made perfect sense and described what was going on in our country. It said that the people who are getting free stuff don’t like the people who are paying for the free stuff, because the ones paying for the free stuff can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuff and their own stuff. The folks who are paying for the free stuff want the free stuff to stop, and the ones getting the free stuff want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting! However, the people who are forcing the people to pay for the free stuff have told the people who are receiving the free stuff, that the people who are paying for the free stuff are being mean, prejudiced and racist. Therefore the ones getting the free stuff have been convinced they need to hate the people who are paying for the free stuff by the people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff, and giving them the free stuff in the first place. We have let the free stuff giving go on for so long that there are now more people getting free stuff than paying for the free stuff.

All great democracies have committed financial suicide somewhere between 200 and 250 years after being founded. The reason? The voters figured out they could vote themselves money from the treasury by electing people who promised to give them money from the treasury in exchange for electing them. Thomas Jefferson said it best: “The democracy (Republic) will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.”

The United States officially became a Republic in 1776, 235 years ago. The number of people now getting free stuff outnumbers the people paying for the free stuff. We have one chance to change that this election year. If we fail to change that, it will spell the end of the United States as we know it.

Fiscal Briefs Summarizing Budgetary Actions FY 2011-13 Biennium

The NC General Assembly’s Fiscal Research Division is pleased to provide you with a new series of fiscal briefs that provide highlights of budgetary actions authorized by the General Assembly for the FY 2011-13 biennium. Organized by Appropriations subcommittee, these fiscal briefs offer summarized descriptions of major budget actions in a concise format. The briefs also include charts and tables that reflect department or agency actual and certified expenditures as well as full-time equivalent position counts for State agencies and departments.

Fiscal briefs are available for Education, General Government, Health and Human Services, Information Technology, Justice and Public Safety, Natural and Economic Resources, and Transportation.

What Will The Marriage Amendment Do?

This month Representative Paul Stam, House Majority Leader, responded to questions about the legal effect of the Marriage Amendment. On May 8, 2012 the voters will decide whether this provision should be added to the State Constitution. NCAE Misses The Mark Again With Misleading Statements About Teacher Pay

NCAE’s February 6 political briefing resorted to misleading statements about teacher pay in an unsuccessful attempt to refute a March 2011 Civitas Institute article about why North Carolina should find a better way to pay teachers. Click here to read Civitas’ reply.

The US Constitution: A Reader

If you are a student of the US Constitution, you may be interested in the following information mailed to me.

Divided into eleven sections, readings cover the principles of the American founding, the framing and structure of the Constitution, the secession crisis and the Civil War, the Progressive rejection of the Constitution, and the building of the administrative state based on Progressive principles.

The U.S. Constitution: A Reader is a resource for studying the U.S. Constitution, and expands upon the readings provided for "Constitution 101: The Meaning and History of the Constitution," which begins on February 20.

NC General Statutes Updated

The General Statutes on the web have now been updated through S.L. 2011-411, which became law 9/15/2011. It had previously been updated through the 2010 short session.

Redistricting Complaints – Press Release From Sen. Bob Rucho

Raleigh, N.C. – A three-judge panel [2/6/12] dismissed nearly half of the complaints filed by Democrats and the NAACP regarding North Carolina’s new congressional and legislative maps.

The Superior Court judges dismissed many claims that the maps are unconstitutional because of divided cities, counties and precincts.

The court did not say that discrimination claims have merit but acknowledged the plaintiffs have made claims and the court must consider the facts.

Below is a statement from Sen. Bob Rucho (R-Mecklenburg), Senate Chairman of the Redistricting Committee:

“I am pleased that many of these frivolous complaints were dismissed today and am confident that once the facts are presented, the remainder of complaints will be tossed out.”

Whitney Houston – 1963-2012 – Sings Our National Anthem

Ten days after the United States went to war in the Persian Gulf, Whitney Houston performed the greatest rendition of the Star Spangled Banner in sports history.

On Jan. 27, 1991, Houston took the field at Tampa Stadium prior to Super Bowl XXV to sing the national anthem. The US was at war in Iraq and the game between the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills was serving as a welcome respite from the televised reports of scud bombs and cease fires…

Houston's gospel-infused performance and her soaring vocals, all set to the patriotic backdrop of flags and flyovers, are the standard against which all anthems are compared. It's as close to perfect as a human voice can get.

“I think it was a time when Americans needed to believe in our country." Houston said later that year. "I remember standing there and looking at all those people, and it was like I could see in their faces the hopes and prayers and fears of the entire country."

The famed singer died on February 11, 2012. She was 48. Take a moment to listen to our national anthem sung by Whitney Houston.

Robbs Receive Golden Elephant Award

The Eleventh Congressional District Republican Party recently held its Biennial Golden Elephant Awards Banquet at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center in Fletcher.

This year’s recipient from Macon County were Richard and Catherine Robb. The Robbs are longtime fixtures in Macon County Republicans politics.

The award is presented to longtime, hard-working, grassroots Republicans. One nominee from each county in the Eleventh District is honored. Nominations are made by the County Republican Parties.

Representative Paul Stam, Majority Leader of the North Carolina House of Representatives was the Keynote Speaker at the Dinner. He also presented the awards.

According to David Sawyer, Chairman of the Eleventh District Republican Party, "We are very proud of tonight’s winners. Through their work and dedication to the Party, its ideology and principles, they have been instrumental in the Party’s efforts to elect Republicans at all levels of government. We salute them and are honored to have them with us tonight."

Executive Committee Meeting

The Macon County Republican Party Executive Committee held a special meeting on Monday, December 5th, 6:30 p.m. at the Macon County Court House. The purpose of the meeting was the selection of a recommendation to submit to the Board of Commissioners a Republican person to fill the District I county commission seat vacated by Commissioner Brian McClellan on December 1st, 2011.

The executive committee unanimously selected our vice-chair Jimmy Tate for that recommendation.

On December 13th, the Macon County Board of Commissioners unanimously accepted our recommendation and Jimmy Tate was promptly sworn in as a county commissioner.

Jimmy will have to run in November of 2012 for that seat and if elected will serve out the remainder of Brian McClellan’s term until 2014.

Press coverage of the event was positive we wish Commissioner Tate well in his new job. A subsequent editorial by the Franklin Press praised the smooth transition and a job well done by the Executive Committee and the Board of Commissioners.
